Sunday September 7th, 2008 Woke up to drizzly rain this morning – nothing annoys more than having to pack up in rain! So it took longer than we wanted it to – we leave overnight camp some 2 hours behind the proposed schedule! This was always going to make it touch and go as to whether or not we arrive at the Rock before sunset – we didn’t. Some funny sights on the road today – a number of cyclist, they must be made. These huge road trains would knock them off their bikes everything they go past I would have thought! A couple of competitors making their way up and giving it stick too – Mk1 Escort with free breeze air con – that looked like fun – not! A couple of dunny doors but the winner of the award for creating the most laughs is the dunny door (support car methinks/hopes) with 6 wheels and tyres strapped upright on the roof and another 2 bolted to the bootlid!!! The roads are endless – it feels like you are getting nowhere even if you are doing between 110 and 130! Stopped at Coober Pedy for refuel and lunch. We had heard about some legendary Yiros but it was definitely somewhere else cause the ones we had we average – no they were less than average! Another stop at Marla for top up eats and drinks and then onto Erldunda for yet another top up on everything before the run across to the rock. Lots of wrecked cars along here in what were obviously some very big accidents. Probably dodging the wildlife or cattle which are everywhere! Pull in to Ayer rock camping ground and it is dark – this is not camping. Every one so quite and whispering etc. Early night under the stars. |
